More Options Making Credit Cards Attractive

Tuesday, May 27th, 2008

by Landon McGehee

Along with the technological revolution has come an increased ease for accomplishing many of the things which in the past took long amounts of time and/or effort. One of the most evident cases of this is in applying for credit cards. The old process would have you either approach your bank or call a credit card company about getting a card, or fill out one of those random applications in the mail (often saying you had already been approved, though that wasn’t the case). Finally, you’d wait. And wait some more. In about 6 weeks if you were lucky, you’d receive the eagerly awaited response. Would you be approved? All the suspense and build-up after the long wait was finally allowed to burst free as you tore open the envelope.

As exciting as that moment may have been, aided by the interminably long wait that preceded it, the fact is that it’s much more convenient nowadays. Not only do you receive responses and verdicts much quicker, there are also a variety of different card options to look into.

For those having difficulty acquiring a credit card there are a variety of prepaid cards available which function just as regular credit cards, allowing them to be used online wherever their equivalent ‘real’ version is accepted. This can give you the benefit of purchasing things online or through other means, while also allowing you to repair or develop a credit rating that can aid you in getting a credit card with an actual line of credit down the line.

Also, the plethora of companies offering cards makes it easier than ever to find a company willing to accept you, no matter how bleak you may feel your financial situation and credit report is.

Before just throwing your hat into the ring with just any credit card company though, you should look around for low APR card rates. Credit card companies are notorious for having not only high interest rates, but also all sorts of other hidden fees as well. A comparison chart of many of the major credit cards and some of the smaller ones as well is available at many online review sites.

In addition you may be wary about exposing your financial information online, and rightfully so. With identity theft at an all time high, and hackers getting more and more clever, exposing your financial information online puts you at a risk of identity theft. Firstly ensure that the company you’re dealing with operates on a secure server, categorized by the URL starting with HTTPS and opposed to HTTP. You can also look for a security certificate on their site verifying them as protected.

Finally, before you start zooming around the net using your glossy new card at every imaginable site, be sure your computer is updated with all the latest security system, and constantly run full scans on your system to ensure no key-loggers, Trojans or other viruses have such aboard, which could easily be used to steal your vital financial information, personal passwords, etc.

Good luck, and enjoy your new card in safety.

How To Choose Your Gift Giving Credit Cards

There are times when gift giving credit cards are the best items you can give. They are the perfect gift options if you don’t know the person you will be giving a gift to or if that person doesn’t need or want anything in particular. In a lot of cases though, gift cards are just perfect because you don’t have to spend a lot of time worrying and looking for the right gift.

You can’t just give any card though. There are actually a variety of cards to choose from. If you want to give the perfect gift, you have to settle for the perfect card. Here’s how you can choose the right gift card:

- There are numerous establishments that honor gift cards. The right thing to do is to find out which of these stores are favorites of your card recipient. If you are a close friend, you would immediately know if the one receiving your gift would prefer a bookstore gift card to a clothes shop gift card.

- You may not be very familiar with your recipient. If this is the case, you can always ask mutual friends to give you hints on the kind of things your recipient would love to have. You can get her a card from a niche store or you could get her a set of cards for several stores.

- You don’t have to stick to cards that are only meant for particular stores. You may be able to afford gift cards that are flexible enough to be used in several shops, boutiques or stores. A gift card like this will give your recipient the benefit of a wider selection to choose from.

- Gift giving credit cards should be chosen based on how easily you can order and pay for them. Read the guidelines for ordering and paying and go for the gift card option that offers you the most convenience. Some cards can be easily ordered online. If you have an existing credit card, you could contact your company and ask if you can order cards and have them charged to your credit.

- You don’t want your recipient to wait for gift card activation. Choose a card that can automatically be used once your recipient gets it. Do remember though that many gift cards have expiration dates. Don’t buy cards ahead if the occasion you are buying it for is still months away.

- Gift cards are definitely not one size fits all. The best gift cards are those that fit the needs and ages of your recipients. Adjust gift card values depending on whether you are giving to a kid or an adult.

- Card reloading is an option for some gift cards. These cards may be a good choice but only if your recipient wants a card of this type. Some cards that can be reloaded may also come with fees.

- Not every buyer can consume gift card values. The best type of cards is one that will offer options for the remaining balance. Check if a gift card issuer will hand over the extra unspent cash.

The variety of gift giving credit cards can give you a headache. It isn’t impossible though to find the right card. All you need to do is to simply put your recipient’s interests and preferences in mind.

How to Deal with Credit Card Debt

It was only a matter of time before the number of people experiencing credit card debt would increase; as they are accepted at almost every business, spending on them has increased dramatically. Very few people that can say they owe nothing on them and as a consequence these finance companies are now owed thousands of dollars on most of the cards that have been issued, unfortunately people are only now beginning to realize that the damage has been done. It now remains for each individual to realize what a position they are in and find some way to obtain credit card debt relief.

There is no easy way around this but once you have come to this decision you must stop using your card to pay for goods otherwise you will never clear the debts. This is always the hardest part especially if the user has been comfortably spending on the card for a long time but until this spending ends the credit card debt relief will not occur. Whilst there are a number of debt consolidation options, the three mentioned below are the most common used for people in similar situations.

The next step is to find a credit card that is offering special low interest rates on balance transfers, this way the debt consolidation can be made into one loan which can be repaid in regular installments. A good alternative to this option is a consolidation loan at a low interest rate where the debtor can decide exactly how much they can afford to repay every month after the outstanding debts have been cleared.

This option does require a certain willingness on the part of the person in debt to be strict about the payments and the regularity in which they are made if they really want to end the debt problem. Whilst arranging a new low interest rate card or loan to consolidate debts is the easiest option to take, it is also only available if the person’s credit rating is in tact.

There are times when credit card debt relief is not possible by this route and it is left to negotiation, often by a specialist company. The company can negotiate with the creditors to accept some money, generally about 50 percent of the outstanding balance and then write off the rest.

Bankruptcy should always be viewed as a last resort when all other options have been tried as there are serious consequences to this course of action. Once this option has been decided upon the debtor must be in no doubt that they will find it difficult to apply for any type of credit until the end of the bankruptcy as they will need to rebuild their credit rating. Debt is no joke so learn from the predicament you found yourself in so that you will not need relief from your credit card debts a second time.
